That And More

(Potent One, 2006)

If you’re askin me for heat, you better like it hot.

If you want some love from me, I’ll give you all I got.

Tell me what you’re lookin for, and I’m gonna give you that and more.

If you ask me to be cool, you better like it cold.

Ask for kisses, you’ll find you’ll have all that you can hold.

Baby, ask me to be yours, and I’m gonna give you that and more.

Anymore, I’m running short of all the sort of people I connect with.

It’s hard to find an open-minded man…these times are tough.

So when you do, what you do is hold on to his love.

If you’re askin me to dance, you better like it hard.

If you’re givin me the chance, I’ll get right to your heart.

Tell me what you lookin for, and I’m gonna give you that and more.

If you’re askin me to stay, you better mean all night.

'Cause if you let me have my way, I’m gonna do you right.

Tell me what you lookin for, and I’m gonna give you that and more.

Anymore, I’m running short of all the sort of people I connect with.

But when I met you, I felt this new thing brewin from within.

There was somethin common goin on, and I’m holdin on to it.

In My Soul

(Potent One, 2006)

Many roads I've beaten. Many days I've roamed.

But directions are not needed. I'm already home in my soul.

I have been forsaken, and it has made me wonder.

But you can save your blanket. I have taken comfort in my soul.

In my soul, I chose the living that's been served the smallest portion.

But do not bother giving to me. I have a fortune.

I am prone to raging and to some real bad behavior.

But I do not require saving. I am my own savior in my soul.

I am truly sorry for those I have offended.

But please call off your army; peace has been extended in my soul.

In my soul, I've learned something about my modest income.

Maybe I have nothing, but I have built a kingdom.

Maybe I'm not turning into who I could be.

But do not be concerning yourself; I am who I should be in my soul.

In my soul, I found completeness. In my soul, I got forgiveness.

So spare me any speeches. I have got deliverance in my soul.

Potent One

(Potent One, 2006)

Hit me with an offer. I promise I’ll go softer on you.

Hit me with a question, and I will give affection to you.

Two can play the game of sayin that we came here as friends.

But you’ve gotta give me something before I let the lovin commence.

And until you do, I’ll be sifting through

A bunch of photos that are in my mind.

Til I find a very potent one,

Then I’ll be sittin in the sun with you.

Tell me somethin pretty, and I will leave this city for you.

Tell me somethin caring, and I’ll do somethin daring for you.

This is only meant to prepare you; I would not want to scare you away.

But you’ve gotta give me something before I send my lovin your way.

And until you do, I’ll be sifting through

A bunch of photos that are in my mind.

Til I find a very potent one,

Then I’ll be sittin in the sun...

Meet me there…in your old back yard.

Meet me there…in your stick shift car.

Meet me there…if there’s still a shard

That’s left from all the lovin

When we had next to nothing

But still, we found somethin to do.

Speak to me sincerely, and I will give you dearly my heart.

Speak to me candidly, and you will win handedly my heart.

I know words can be deceiving, but still, some meaning’s gotta get through.

You’ve gotta give me something before I give my lovin to you.

And until you do, I’ll be sifting through

A bunch of photos that are in my mind.

Til I find a very potent one,

Then I’ll be sittin in the sun with you.

Cherry Blossom

(Potent One, 2006)

Bring me back a blossom, Baby, from your cherry tree.

You will get back lots of love from me.

Give me something gentle, Baby, whisper in the dark.

I’m a sentimental girl at heart.

Maybe just a few words, Baby, just a tender few?

Oh, what lovely things I’ll do for you.

I could move you smoothly, Baby, and kiss you on your face.

What’s a girl to do for your embrace?

Could you try it once with feeling?

Be a little softer, Baby.

See the sea of stars this evening?

What a night to love your lady.

I’ve loved you for years, my Baby, don’t you understand?

You’re no souvenir; you are my man.

But sometimes, I need sweetness, Baby, to feel like lovers do.

And if you make me feel this, you will too.

Take me in your arms, my Baby, take me if you dare.

You’ll see how my charms can ease your cares.

Touch can change the world, my Baby, care to alter mine?

C’mon, let your girl just blow your mind.

Could you try it once with feeling? Be a little softer, Baby.

See the sea of stars this evening? What a night to love your lady.

Bring me back a blossom, Baby, from your cherry tree.

You will get back lots of love from me.

The Hold

(Potent One, 2006)

Lose what you own. Find what you need.

Love is not your home. Love is your deeds.

You can be alone in good company.

If you just let go, you will be free of what you hold on to and the hold that something’s got on you.

Look to the rain. Look to the stars.

Make yourself a name that sets you apart.

Not by what you say, but what’s in your heart.

And what it is you pray when it gets dark.

See, what you hold on to is the hold that something’s got on you.

Grace in mind. Grace in soul.

Takes a little time. Takes some control.

But you will be just fine. When you get old

Throw the world a line; relinquish the hold

That you hold on to and you can break the hold that something’s got on you.

Trouble With Moving

(Potent One, 2006)

You can get out of here, maybe just disappear.

Pack your bags and run off anywhere.

But to get to the place where you forget his face,

Moving will not get you there.

You can put miles between yourself and your old scene.

And a different wind can blow right through your hair.

But if you wanna be free from your memories,

Moving will not get you there.

You can grace a new town. You can chase a new love around. But you can’t erase the past; that’s bound to you.

You can change your address. Leave him with little less

Than all the tender moments that you shared.

But if you’re trying to get over what you knew,

Moving will not get you there.

You can run to another shore. You can put your name on another door.

You can breathe yourself a brand new kind of air.

But it you wanna get past all that you regret.

Moving will not get you there.

I graced me a new town. I chased a new love around. But I could not erase my past it’s bound to you.

You can lay down your head onto a different bed.

And at a different skyline, you can stare.

But if you wanna be free from those memories,

Moving will not get you there.

One Blue Day

(Potent One, 2006)

One blue day, I was down and especially blue.

I was watchin sleet fall to my feet like February glass.

Til the day you came into town, and you knew what to do,

And we forgot about the weather outside or whether it would pass.

And we did up the night. And you lit up my life but I guess it wasn’t right; you went back home.

Now it may be bad that I’m thinking of you, but baby I had to love you. Please come back soon.

One blue day, we were walking down Grand Avenue,

Drinking something strong and singing songs like new friends acting old.

And we played at our talking like a game we both knew

Even better than our frozen hands that we didn’t know were cold.

And we made the very most of the day I was the host to a stranger whose post was staked at home.

Now it may be bad that I’m thinking of you, but baby I had to love you. Please come back soon.

One blue day, we were sitting on a bench laughing thru

The very end of the night we spent in happy company.

And you gave me a fitting smile, cuz that’s what you do

Before exchanging trinkets when you think it’s the last time that you’ll meet.

And I hopped on a train. And you got on a plane to the spot from where you came. You went back home.

Now it may be bad that I’m thinking of you, but baby I had to love you. Please come back soon.  One blue day.

Halfway

(Potent One, 2006)

If you come to me, then I will come to you. And I’ll be halfway closer to who you knew.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. Then we could feel that way again.

You gotta hold on to the things that last. Just let the good times be, and let the bad be past.

I think the last stone’s finally been cast, And we could feel that way again.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. And I’ll be halfway closer to who you knew.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. Then we could feel that way again.

We had a good thing goin in our time. We had an honest love in its honest prime.

Nothing has changed except our state of mind. I think we’d feel that way again.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. And I’ll be halfway closer to who you knew.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. Then we could feel that way again.

You take a step, then I’ll take a step for you.

You take a step, then I’ll take a step… Til then, I’ll just be waiting for what you’re gonna do.

Dew always settles just before the dawn. And dust starts collecting if things sit too long.

See, we’re only faded, baby; we ain’t gone. I think we’d feel that way again.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. And I’ll be halfway closer to who you knew.

If you come to me, then I will come to you. Then we could feel that way again.

Mother

(Potent One, 2006)

She is a lover to father and a mother to me.

A writer of stories, but I think there’s more she could be.

She helps not herself, just everyone else in this house.

The role that she plays is to make sure the flames get put out.

And I can’t imagine that God could have fashioned A woman more woman than she.

She takes what she’s got, and she makes it a lot. Then she gives it away for free.

She is a keeper of secrets much deeper than sin.

She says the answer to earthquakes and cancer is within.

And maybe she’s wrong, but hey, I’ll go along with her still.

'Cause if she can’t help me I know that nobody else will.

And I can’t imagine that God could have fashioned A woman more woman than she.

She takes what she’s got, and she makes it a lot. Then she gives it away for free.

I am your daughter, and I wouldn’t offer

To give something I couldn’t take.

So I see you’re hurtin; give me your burden

If for no other reason than to teach me your ways.

Please, Mother.

She is a lover to father and a mother to me.

And I know she cries, but she still tries to hide that from me.

Wisdom, they say, comes from learning with age to be hard.

But I have this theory that some mothers clearly just are.

And I can’t imagine that God could have fashioned A woman more woman than she.

She takes what she’s got, and she makes it a lot. Then she gives it away for free.

By Now

(Potent One, 2006)

By now, Colorado is a memory you’re doing without.

By now, you have followed the road that goes away from our house.

All the kids were never born in our cottage by the sea.

You didn’t wake me in the morn; you just slipped out on me in my dreams.

By now, the sun is setting on horizons you’re driving into.

By now, you’re forgetting all the mountains and valleys we knew.

All the time was never spent on that hillside holding hands.

But our vows were never said, so I guess it was nothing before it began.

By now, you have emptied your pockets out onto her chair.

But by now, do you have any reservations about being there?

And do you wonder about me by now?

Nobody's A Stranger

(Potent One, 2006)

The whole world is your opponent when you’re going it alone and you’re afraid of every stone

That you haven’t unturned.

Fear not, my brother. The shadow’s just the other way of showing there’s another

Side to what you have learned.

But if you smile on your neighbor, nobody’s a stranger, but everybody’s scary if you see them that way.

It’s you you are thieving if you go believing that someone stole your sunny day.

You say there’s dangerous people and dangerous steeples and dangerous beetles

Crawling over the ground.

Fear not, my daughter. Tears are just water and grey is just a color

That you see when you’re down.

But if you smile on your neighbor, nobody’s a stranger, but everybody’s scary if you see them that way.

It’s you you are thieving if you go believing that someone stole your sunny day.

You look out for the south sides. You look out for the outsides You look out for any side

That isn’t your own.

Well, fear is the stranger, but you are its neighbor every time you cater

To makin it at home.

But if you smile on your neighbor, nobody’s a stranger, but everybody’s scary if you see them that way.

It’s you you are thieving if you go believing that someone stole your sunny day.

Ruth

(Potent One, 2006)

Just before I get down, she comes around and shows me the truth.

Just before I lose sight of why I’m alive, she’s got the proof.

There ain’t been a day, not in my age, not in my youth.

That I haven’t been better for knowing Ruth.

You got a lot of smiles up your sleeve. You got a lot of miles on your feet.

You got a lot of child left in your eyes.

I got a lot of interest in your health. Do you really have to leave all by yourself?

I guess you’re just the solitary type.

Just before I get down, she comes around and shows me the truth.

Just before I lose sight of why I’m alive, she’s got the proof.

There ain’t been a day, not in my age, not in my youth.

That I haven’t been better for knowing Ruth.

You got a lot of stories in your hands. You got a lot of mornings in your frying pans.

You got a lot of warnings in your tone.

You got so many pictures on your shelf. Are you really gonna leave all by yourself?

I guess you gotta do this on your own.

You got a lot of wisdom in your ways. You got a lot of rhythm in your pace.

Everyone could use your steady beat.

Just before I get down, she comes around and shows me the truth.

Just before I lose sight of why I’m alive, she’s got the proof.

There ain’t been a day, not in my age, not in my youth.

That I haven’t been better for knowing Ruth.

Twice

(Potent One, 2006)

You never know when the road’s gonna put you two in the same place.

You never know when the snow’s gonna lay on his lashes like lace.

You may think there are things that you’re never ever ever ever gonna do.

But you won’t really know til you find that it’s happening to you.

Then, you can blame it on the cloudless cover.

You can blame it on your careless lover.

But either way, you want another

Chance to make…

The same mistake…twice.

You never see when the breeze is gonna dust off a spark from the past.

You never see when the leaves are gonna beat on his window like jazz.

You may think there are things that you’re never ever ever ever gonna do.

But don’t you say “never,” Babe, cuz you’ll find that it happens to you.

Then, you can blame it on the cloudless cover.

You can blame it on your careless lover.

But either way, you want another

Chance to make…

The same mistake…twice.

You never mind when the light goes and softens mood of the house.

You never mind when the time makes it too late for you to leave now.

You may think there are things that you’re never ever ever ever gonna do.

But you never know til you go through it, and it’s happening to you.

Then, you can blame it on the cloudless cover.

You can blame it on your careless lover.

But either way, you want another

Chance to make…

The same mistake…twice.

Weekend Wine

(Potent One, 2006)

I’m sittin by the lakeside, sippin summer slowly.

I’m throwin to the wayside what’s goin on below me.

I just float through the day like a boat on the water.

And as time fades away, I cannot be bothered.

It’s the season I have no more room for reasons why I can’t consume

A little weekend wine on a Tuesday afternoon.

I lose track of the days. I lose track of the hours.

I track just where I’ve stayed by railroad tracks and flowers.

I got little to do but whittle this sweet song

Right out of the blue, then sing it all the day long.

It’s the season I have no more room for reasons why I can’t consume

A little weekend wine on a Tuesday afternoon.

But summer flies as fast as an eagle

And echoes like the cry of a seagull

Into the fall and winter and spring time

Til it all turns to one big drink of wine

Night falls like a needle, silent all the way down.

There’s as many stars as people in this tiny off the lake town.

And I thank every one for the way that I came to this place in the sun,

And for another day to drink some weekend wine on a Tuesday afternoon.

Tiny Flat

(Potent One, 2006)

It’s crowded in this tiny flat; I can’t see where my floor is at.

I buried myself in just like a tomb.

I got cookbooks lining my front deck and records right up to my neck.

But baby, I have got some space for you.

My living room is where I eat and comb my hair and brush my teeth.

My bed just barely fits inside my room.

I got no where to lay out straight…got no chair that holds my weight.

But baby, I have got some space for you.

My counter top’s all filled with Glens. I don’t know where my toaster went.

My pantry’s chock full of organic food.

So maybe there’s no room to dance without stepping on my plants.

Baby, I have got some space for you.

My spice rack’s doubling as art. I still can’t tell the two apart;

I lost my wall to post-its…posters too.

Yeah, it’s crowded in this tiny flat, but honey don't you mind bout that.

Baby, I have got some space for you.

New Messiah

(Potent One, 2006)

Today I saw my soul mate. I saw him from afar.

But he was in his own space, on a phone and in a car.

Maybe if I was more plugged in, he would have seen me t

here. But tuning in feels like I’m shruggin off the freedom in the air.

There’s a box to get you here where a box is what you’re in

So that you never have to fear of interacting with the wind.

I feel we’re moving less together, and we’re less inclined to bend

And I been feeling like a feather in a wind that doesn’t end…. Need a messiah…a new messiah.

People go collect their treasures to fill up the hole inside.

Then they use them as a measure for how well they’ve lived their lives.

Doesn’t anybody wonder about anything at all?

Would we rather just be under spells and up against a wall?

Are we a part of a big mission just to give away our rights?

Why do we opt into this prison that will tell us what we like?

Am I really just a fish being sized up by a man?

Is there anything to wish for that I can’t put in my hand

? Find a messiah…a new messiah.

Hush, baby. We are only spinning on a world that’s just a ball.

And this is only the beginning 'cause in space we’re very small.

And it ain’t really gonna matter what you wear or what you own

Or about some corporate ladder if you ain’t happy at home.

Don’t just buy it 'cause you’re frightened. Don’t just do it 'cause it’s done.

Don’t believe that I’m enlightened any more than anyone.

It really doesn’t have to go this way until we’re dead and go

ne. So find someone to hold you close, and you can make another dawn.

You can be a messiah…a new messiah.
